Tunis – Arrival

Upon arrival at Tunis-Carthage International Airport, you will be met by your private driver / guide and taken to your hotel for check-in. Depending on your arrival time, you may begin with a tour of Tunis's old medina (ancient city). From the charming architecture to the picturesque souks (markets), the ancient medina is well worth a visit.

Carthage / Sidi Bou Said / Bardo Museum


After breakfast, you will visit the ancient archaeological site of Carthage, once the most significant ancient city in northern Africa. This site holds ruins from many eras of history: including the Punics, Romans, Vandals, and Byzantines. Your guide will take you to the Phoenician Cemetery, Antonin’s Bath, Punic Harbors, the Carthage Museum, and more. Depending on your time, you may want to drive up to the beautiful Sidi Bou Said, which overlooks the Gulf of Tunis. Return to Tunis and visit the Bardo Museum. This is a world-class museum featuring the largest collection of mosaics in the world. There are also numerous rooms in the museum featuring artifacts from the Punic to Islamic periods. Dinner will be at the hotel.

Dougga / Bulla Regia / El Kef

After breakfast, you will travel to the roman ruins in Dougga. This enormous Roman archaeological site has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. Overlooking the vast surrounding regions, it is not uncommon to see locals herding their sheep through the Roman ruins. Continue north to Bulla Regia where you will find some of the best-preserved underground Roman villas. You will also visit its basilica and amphitheater. St. Augustine of Hippo once visited Bulla Regia in 399 AD and stood in this amphitheater to reproach the citizens for their lack of faith. After your visit, travel to El Kef for the night.

Makthar / Kairouan


Today you will visit the archaeological site of Makthar. There are several notable archaeological wonders to keep an eye out for including a Trajan forum, large baths, schola juvenum (Roman minor militia club), and other pre-Roman structures. At the entrance to the archaeological site in Makthar is a museum where you can find some mosaics and other artifacts excavated from this site. Afterward, you will depart for the famous and historic Islamic city of Kairouan. You will have time to relax in the evening.

Kairouan / Sbeitla / Tozeur

If you didn’t yesterday, this morning you will visit the Grand Mosque Okba Ibn Nafaa, established in 670 AD. You will also see the 9th-century Aghlabid Pools that provided the historic city with water. After that, your next visit will be to the archaeological site of Sbeitla. As you explore this site you will see numerous ancient church sites along with intricately designed baptisteries, temples, baths, and the Arch of Diocletian. Sbeitla also has a museum containing a variety of mosaics and other objects found at the site. After exploring this historic city, you will start your journey into the Southern desert region. Travel to Tozeur for dinner and night.

Tozeur / Chebika / Mides / Tamerza / Ong Jemel


After breakfast, you will spend your day exploring the region around Tozeur. Enjoy the Saharan charm of this area, its oasis date farms, and unique architecture. You will visit the impressive gorge and canyon of Mides and Chebika. Then, take a trip into the mountains to see the hidden waterfalls of Tamerza. In the afternoon, you can explore the historic medina with its unique architecture. You will also visit the Eden Palms Museum where you will step into a date palm grove and learn all about Tozeur’s date production. Return to Touzer for dinner and the night.

Tozeur / Ong Jemel / Mos Espa / Sahara

After breakfast, you will hop into a 4 X 4 Land Cruiser and head out into the desert region for a morning tour. You will visit the Ong Jemel ‘neck of the camel’ rock formation. This was the film location where Darth Maul arrives on Tatooine and releases the Sith Probes in Star Wars Episode I: A Phantom Menace. Continue across the Sahara dunes to the Mos Espa Star Wars film site. Then make your way to the location of the igloo of Lars Family Homestead exterior which was Luke Skywalker’s home in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. This film location was also used in Attack of the Clones and the final shot of Revenge of the Sith. You can enjoy a free afternoon for rest and relaxation.

Chott el Jerid / Douz / Tamezret

This morning, travel across the Chott el Jerid, the largest salt flat in Tunisia until you arrive in Douz. Douz is considered a ‘gateway to the Sahara’ and also has the largest date palmary in southern Tunisia. Travel to the Berber village of Tamezret where you will visit a museum to learn about the unique history, language and culture of the Berbers (also known as Amazigh). Make sure to visit the nearby Cafe Ben Jemaa which dates back to 1932. Enjoy a cup of freshly brewed green tea with local almonds. Here you can go to the rooftop for a panoramic view of the nearby Berber villages of Taoujout and Zraoua. Spend the night in Tamezret or in the nearby Berber village of Matmata.

Matmata / Ksar Ghilane

In the morning, travel to Matmata where the locals have lived in underground troglodyte homes for centuries. There are just a few remaining families still living in underground troglodyte houses in Matmata today. You will get a chance to visit troglodyte museum and homes in Matmata. For Star Wars fans, this was also the filming location of Luke Skywalker’s interior home. Afterwards, travel to the beautiful oasis of Ksar Ghilane situated next to the Sahara dunes. Here you can enjoy a swim in the natural hot spring, or ride a camel in the desert, or rent a 4x4 quad and drive out to an abandoned Roman fort.

Ksar Ghilane / Chenini / Djerba

Djerba is home to many relaxing beaches


Today, you will depart the Sahara Desert and make your way to Chenini. Wander through this historic Berber mountainside village. The mountaintop view is well worth the climb to the top When you are ready, travel to the island of Djerba for dinner and an overnight stay.

Djerba Island Tour

After breakfast, you will begin your island tour of Djerba. Explore the wonders of Djerba Island with stops at El Ghriba Synagogue (the oldest synagogue in North Africa), Djerbahood, and Guellala (pottery town). You may want to visit Houmet Souk to explore its markets and to have a fresh fish lunch. Once you have finished the island tour, return to your hotel for an afternoon of rest or extra time at the Mediterranean beach.

Djerba / El Jem / Sousse

Today, you will have a morning departure for El Jem. The Roman Coliseum in this city is one of the best-preserved in the world. It was constructed between 230 and 238 AD and is believed to at one time have hosted between 30,000 to 45,000 spectators. Take time exploring this enormous structure and do not forget to go down to the rooms where gladiators awaited their upcoming battle. There is a museum in the town that hosts a plethora of mosaics. Travel to Sousse and if time remains in the day, perhaps you would like to see the archeological museum, kasbah, and medina. Dinner will be at the hotel.

Sousse / Thurbubo Majus / Zaghouan / Hammamet

After breakfast, you will depart for Thuburbo Majus. This Roman site has a small coliseum, baths, and various Roman houses allowing one to imagine life in a quintessential Roman African city. Continue to the mountainside Roman site of Zaghouan, where you will find a temple of the ‘water god’. You can still see the remains of the Roman aqueduct which once supplied water to the ancient city of Carthage. When you are ready, travel to the coastal city of Hammamet. If time permits, you can explore the Hammamet medina. Dinner will be at the hotel.
